What do Roofers do?

Roofers install, repair, and maintain the coverings which keep a structure's interior dry. They use various materials, such as bitumen and roofing shingles, to create an impermeable barrier. This keeps water from penetrating into the building or damaging its structure. Roofers are also equipped with a range of tools to cut, shape and hammer in shingles. Some roofers specialize only in certain types of roofing or materials.

Roofer duties could include meeting with customers to discuss their needs for roofing and estimating cost. They work together with other building professionals, including carpenters, electricians and plumbers, to finish a project. In order to install a new roofing system, a roofer will need to take measurements of the existing roof. They lay down multiple layers of materials to build a protective layer, beginning with the vapor barrier. The most common roofing material chosen by clients is shingles. However, other roofing materials are also available.

On low-slope or flat roofs, roofers may install a single layer membrane made of waterproof rubber or a plastic. This is a common roofing material for commercial roofs. But it can also work on residential roofs. Roofers also install clay or metal tiles, wood shakes, and solar shingles for roofs that have steep pitches. Some roofers install green roofs with soil and vegetation to reduce the heat-island effect in urban environments.

Most residential roofs feature shingles. To apply a new shingle roof to an existing roof, roofers will first cover the roof with insulation and spread a thick tarlike substance. Then, roofers apply overlapping strips of roofing shingles on top of the tar-like substance. After the shingle is installed, roofers cover the nails exposed and seal the seams. Roofers can install flashing around vents, chimneys, or other protrusions.

Many roofers love the outdoors and work best in warm temperatures. However, they need to be able handle extreme weather conditions. Rain and snow can stop or significantly slow down roofing work. Roofers have to be able put in long hours to meet deadlines. In order to do this, they need to work quickly and accurately. Also, roofers need to have the ability to climb ladders to get to different parts of a rooftop. Roofers also often have to wear safety belts when working.
